Oh, NO! Here it comes again!
The past overtakes you like nothing you’ve ever experienced before.
It feels like all of a sudden you are in the past, as something painful is happening right now.
But, you’re not sure what happened to bring you to this point.
Often, you don’t have clear pictures of the hurt you endured. You experience strong bodily sensations or intense emotions – which overtake you.
These experiences are overwhelming to the point that you have to stop what you are doing.
You can’t explain why this is happening.
You feel like a deer in headlights, like everyone can see what’s happening to you – but no one can help.
I want you to know that this is not abnormal. This reaction is your body protecting you.
When these memories start coming up, either in your mind or body, it can be a safe time to start healing from them.
Trauma’s Effects
While trauma has become somewhat of a buzzword in the mental health world, it is authentic.
By definition, a traumatic experience is one in which your nervous system is overwhelmed due to a threat.
You may have felt terror, fear, or powerless during this experience. While trauma can be anything from a one-time occurrence (like a car accident) or a repeat event (like abuse), the chemical reactions happening in your body and brain are the same.
No one can determine if something is traumatic, except for you.
Your lived experience is valid.
If you feel you have had trauma in your life and that it is making an impact on you, it is worth processing with a professional.
Take this step – Therapy could be the answer.
To process your past trauma and hurts, committing to therapy is critical. Building trust, consistency, and dedication within the therapeutic alliance is a healing practice in itself.
This work is my life’s mission. I want to hold a safe, therapeutic, and healing space to help you make sense of your feelings, your experiences, and give you the tools and support to take steps toward moving forward.
When you reclaim yourself from your past hurts, you help raise the consciousness of the planet. You step into your true form. You don’t have to live without shining a light on the event that took your power from you. When fear is exposed, it loses its grip.
Further, a trusting therapeutic relationship is the cornerstone to feeling safe enough to access your deepest hurtful memories.
While working together, we will use many modalities. One popular modality that I have trained in for the treatment of trauma is EMDR.
EMDR can help you – when nothing else has.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a therapy that can help you heal from having these intrusive experiences.
Participating in EMDR within the trusted therapeutic alliance, you can heal from these memories and move on with your life.
This is not going to be a magic pill. You will need to show up, do the work, and be gentle with yourself in the process.
It will be painful at times, as we are accessing your most triggering and hurtful memories and experiences.
As a treatment developed specifically for working with trauma, EMDR complements many other therapeutic interventions that we will use in our work together, including talk therapy, mindfulness, visualization, TF-CBT (trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy), and others.
It won’t always be comfortable or easy, but it will be worth it.
